Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aims to use education and other activities to empower global citizens as they work to solve the environmental issues we face today.
ESD's educational scope covers topics such as “the environment", “development", “human rights", “peace", “multiculturalism", “gender balance", “international understanding", and “welfare".
ESD focuses, not only on school-centered education, but on educating businesses and other organizations as well. The challenge is to help create a diverse generation who are stakeholders in sustainability.
The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which Japan proposed in August 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg Summit), seeks to promote ESD internationally, with UNESCO as the lead agency. The kick-off DESD event was held at Expo 2005 in Aichi Japan. From that point, countries around the world followed their lead and will continue to do so until 2014.
At the UNESCO World Conference on DESD (mid-decade report) held in Bonn, Germany in March 2009, it was proposed that DESD (final evaluation) be held in Japan in 2014.
